About Us
The Chaves Soil and Water Conservation District was organized on June 18th, 1941. It was first named the Macho Soil and Water Conservation District until it was granted an official name change to the Macho-Roswell Natural Resource Conservation District on December 20th, 1968. In 1974, the Board of Supervisors requested that the Natural Resource Conservation Commission consider the Macho –Roswell Natural Resource Conservation District be renamed to the Chaves Natural Resource Conservation District, believing that the district served a greater portion of Chaves County and felt that the name should better represent the location. On February 21st, 1975, the commission accepted the name change. In 1978, under the Soil and Water Conservation District Act, the name was officially changed to the current name, Chaves Soil and Water Conservation District.
(NMDA) New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the SWCD’s:
The Soil and Water Conservation District Act provides for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture to assist local SWCD boards with the planning and development of programs and projects as well as administrative matters. The Soil and Water Conservation Commission advises the Secretary of NMDA and the New Mexico State University Board of Regents regarding how assistance to districts shall be provided. NMDA employs four specialists for the soil and water conservation programs in the Agricultural Programs and Resources Division.
